When It Is Time for Switchboard Upgrades

A board hardly ever quits in one hit. Warning signs show up first, and by the time we get the call, most Brookvale homes have been living with one of these for months already.

  • Circuit breakers trip repeatedly, especially when the kettle, dryer and heater run together.
  • The board still uses ceramic fuses and fuse wire instead of modern breakers.
  • Only a single safety switch protects the entire property, or none is fitted at all.
  • The board feels warm to touch, smells faintly of hot plastic, or shows scorch marks.
  • You are planning a home reno, a ducted system or an EV charger that will need extra circuits.
  • A previous electrician has flagged the board as a defect on another job.

What We Handle Under Switchboard Upgrades

There is more to it than unbolting the old box and hanging a new one. Here is what typically happens on the day.

A full replacement board. The old carrier and fuse assembly comes out entirely, replaced with a unit sized to the circuits your home actually runs.

RCBOs on every circuit. Each one pairs a breaker with its own trip protection, keeping a fault contained to that circuit alone, not the whole house.

Converting fuses to breakers. If the enclosure itself still has life in it but the fuse carriers do not, individual circuits can be converted without pulling the whole board.

Clear circuit labelling. Every breaker gets a clear, legible label, so whoever opens the board next, including you, knows exactly what it does.

Fixing defects as we go. Anything non-compliant the inspection turns up gets sorted in the same visit, rather than added to a list for later.

Clipsal and Hager components. We fit name-brand gear inside the new board, not the cheapest import available.

What Your Switchboard Upgrades Quote Depends On

No two boards cost the same to replace. Several factors shift the quote either way, and we walk through them with you before starting.

  • The board's overall size, and the number of circuits it has to carry.
  • Whether the meter panel or main switch needs work at the same time.
  • How easy the switchboard itself is to reach, especially in older flats with tight meter cupboards.
  • Any defect rectification the inspection uncovers once the old fuses and carriers are out.
  • Whether you want spare capacity built in for an EV charger later on.

We confirm everything on paper before the job starts, and the price we quote is the price you pay. New customers also get $50 off their first service.

Why Brookvale Properties Call For This

Cross Street is a fair snapshot of Brookvale's electrical stock. Post-war cottages sit close to 1960s and 1980s brick walk-up flats, and plenty of both still run their original switchboards.

Many of those boards still run their original ceramic fuses, never upgraded to breakers of any kind. That was fine for a 1960s appliance load.

It is not built for a dryer, an induction cooktop and a couple of split systems running at once.

A ceramic fuse does not trip cleanly the way a breaker does. It gets hot, and eventually the fuse wire lets go, sometimes mid-cook or mid-load of washing.

It is a pattern common enough across Brookvale's older pockets that board replacements are among our most-booked jobs here.

The Rules That Apply in NSW

AS/NZS 3000 sets the standard every switchboard we install has to meet, covering how circuits, RCBOs and earthing are arranged.

Replacing a board is notifiable electrical work under NSW rules. Once testing is complete, we lodge a Certificate of Compliance, so there is a paper record the job was done properly.

NSW also expects an RCD safety switch on every circuit, beyond just the power and lighting ones. It is the single defect our inspections turn up most often on older boards.

DIY electrical work on a switchboard is illegal in NSW. It has to be a licensed electrician, full stop.

Our Switchboard Upgrades Process, Start to Finish

A straightforward switchboard swap typically takes most of a day. Add defect rectification or a meter upgrade, and the job can spill into a second day.

  1. Assess the board. We open it up, note what we are dealing with, whether that is ceramic fuses or corroded carriers, and confirm the scope with you on paper first.
  2. Kill the power and pull the old unit. Supply is isolated at the meter, and the existing enclosure comes out. On older ceramic-fuse boards there is often a cavity surprise behind it that adds time to the job.
  3. Wire in the replacement. The new board goes in with a dedicated RCBO on each circuit, wired to the current standard.
  4. Test everything and sign it off. Every circuit gets checked individually, with compliance paperwork handed over before we leave.

The Difference on a Switchboard Upgrades Job

Every job we do carries our own name behind it, not a subcontractor's badge.

The workmanship on your new board carries a lifetime guarantee, so a return visit never adds a labour bill. Parts and gear carry their own product warranty, twelve months, on top.

We are Master Electricians Australia members, and every board is fitted with name-brand components, not whatever is cheapest that week.

Common questions

Switchboard Upgrades FAQs

Six of the questions we get asked most about switchboard upgrades.

Does a switchboard upgrade mean the power is off all day?

We do need to isolate supply for part of the job, but it is rarely the whole day. We agree a rough window with you upfront, and most homes have power back on well before evening.

Does a switchboard upgrade need to be lodged with anyone in NSW?

Yes, board replacements count as notifiable electrical work. Once everything checks out we issue a Certificate of Compliance confirming it meets the current wiring rules.

Is a licensed electrician required for switchboard upgrades?

It has to be, by law. Working on a switchboard without a licence is illegal in NSW, and given it protects the whole house, that is not a rule anyone should bend.

Do you take Saturday bookings for switchboard upgrades?

Where the schedule allows, yes. Weekend slots fill fast, so give us a call and we will lock in the next one available.

What are the clearest signs a switchboard needs upgrading?

Repeated tripping, ceramic fuses still in place, or one safety switch trying to cover the whole property are the signs we hear about most. Any one of them is worth getting checked.

What does a switchboard upgrade usually cost?

The circuit count, whether the meter panel needs work too, and any defect rectification found on the day all affect the price. It is all confirmed on paper before anything starts, and new customers get $50 off.
